Commanders Corner
It's been a while since I last communicated with you. I apologize.
We fully expect 2026 to be a huge year! Come on out and see the changes, step up and see how you can contribute to our success!
The cplegionpost20.com website will remain the place for updates and information on Post 20 activities. We realize not all our members have a smartphone or may want to access the information from the internet; we will print a monthly calendar of activities which will be available in the post.
A lot continues to happen at 1401 North Main Street thanks to our Legion, Sons of the Legion, and the Auxiliary members who volunteer countless hours on a host of ongoing activities.
A postcard will be mailed at the beginning of February announcing that due to changes required by National, the Legion and SAL need to have 1st nominations of elections at the February meeting, 2nd nominations in March, and, if required, an election will occur in April. The Auxiliary will stay on their traditional schedule. We are still planning a joint installation and party to kick off our 2026-2027. To continue to thrive and represent all interests we need more participation at all of our meetings. The Legion meets at 6:30 pm the 2nd Monday of each month, SAL meets at 6pm the 2nd Wednesday of each month, and the Auxiliary meets at 6pm on the 3rd Monday of each month.
eTab machines are finally installed! We had some logistical issues, but they were up and running as of January 5th. Come on out and try your luck.
Come on out on Tuesday evenings and check out the Dance Club that meets and is open to the public. If you’re a beginning dancer or experienced, there is a lot of fun to be had! Yoga is starting on February 5th. And our 1st Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament will be on February 21st to name just a few of our upcoming events.
We continue to make incremental improvements to Post 20. Some of the major items that have been taken care of are:
1. A complete remodel of the rental hall space. Thanks to Julie and Aly, we are renting the space out more than we ever have. We are a cost-effective solution to our members and our community.
2. All the roofing was torn off and replaced on main building, garage, and SAL building.
3. The hazardous material tanks were removed at the ball field.
4. The dilapidated ballfield press box / apartment, was torn down.
5. The pavilion roof was rebuilt and is no longer full of holes and leaking. Paint was applied.
6. The Mural out-front was dedicated and continues to be a testament to all veterans past-current-future.
7. We have built out a smoking room for our smoking members. Interesting, when I contacted Indiana Excise, they had no record of Post 20 being permitted to be a smoking establishment.
8. The canteen received a fresh coat of paint.
9. The garage and pavilion wiring was replaced at the request of our insurer.
10. The upstairs hall wiring was all replaced when we discovered several code violations.
11. The upstairs kitchen fan was replaced and now meets code.
12. We appear to have solved the problem with the canteen flooding (knock on wood). We installed a gate valve and replaced the gutters with oversized gutters that match.
13. Chairs have been replaced and while we have had issues with many of them, they continue to be replaced as warranted. They were made for us by a company in Knox, Indiana and at this point in time have replaced ½ of them.
14. New smart TV’s have been installed in the Canteen, several of which were donated.
15. We are working to return American Legion Baseball to the ball field. Field rentals are increasing and being used by soccer clubs and baseball teams. To schedule time on the field, complete the online form found on our website.
16. Many other improvements have also occurred, making Post 20 a safe and healthy place for all veterans, visitors, and guests!
Sunday Funday is still a thing. Our Progressive Raffle continues to be the main draw and is currently over $10,000. As the jackpot grows, members and guests turn out. We hold a 50/50 and do other raffles as well. We also have food for sale.
Please pay your 2026 membership if you have not yet done so. Legion is $50. SAL & Auxiliary are both $30. You can renew your membership online or in person. If you’re interested in becoming a member for the 1st time come in anytime we are open and talk to our staff or an officer.
I want to thank all our volunteers because of you we are successful and without your help and support we would not have turned Post 20 around making it the best Legion Post in the Lake County!
Thank you
Kevin
